Mirissa is a small beach town with an outsized reputation — and it earns it. The main beach is a beautiful crescent of golden sand sheltered by a headland, with warm turquoise water calm enough for swimming all season. What sets Mirissa apart globally is its whale watching — the deep-water channel south of Mirissa is one of the best places on earth to see blue whales (the largest animals that have ever lived) and sperm whales, along with spinner dolphins and occasional orcas. The season runs from November to April and sighting rates for blue whales exceed 80% on most departures. Beyond the beach and whales, Mirissa has excellent beachside restaurants, Coconut Tree Hill viewpoint, and the hidden Secret Beach.

Book a licensed whale watching boat for a morning departure (6:30 AM, 4–5 hours)

Eat fresh grilled tuna or lobster at a beachside restaurant
Swim at the eastern end of the beach near Parrot Rock for calmer water
Watch the fishing boats depart and return at Mirissa harbour early morning
