Things you will do
- Your Montara Lanka driver meets you at Bandaranaike International Airport with a welcome sign. A short 7km drive takes you to your Negombo hotel. The evening is free to explore the Dutch canal, fish market, and beach-side cafes at your leisure. Gentle start — no sightseeing pressure today.
- Drive north into the Cultural Triangle (approximately 3 hours). Stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site carved into a vast granite rock face, housing 153 Buddha statues and richly painted ceilings dating back to the 1st century BC. Continue to Sigiriya village for check-in. Evening: optional sunset walk in the village with local farming families.
- Begin at 6:30 AM to climb Sigiriya before the crowds and heat. Ascend through the water gardens, past the famous frescoes of celestial maidens, over the Lion's Paw platform to the summit palace ruins with sweeping views across the jungle. Afternoon: optional climb to Pidurangala Rock — a quieter viewpoint offering arguably better panoramic views of Sigiriya itself at sunset.
- Drive to Kandy via a spice and herb garden visit (approx. 3 hours). Arrive to the highland capital nestled around a beautiful man-made lake. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of Buddhism's most important shrines. Walk the Kandy lakeside in the evening, then attend an optional Kandyan cultural dance and drumming performance — fire-walking and acrobatics included.
- A scenic mountain drive south through endless tea estates (approx. 2 hours). Stop at a working tea factory to see the withering, rolling, fermenting and drying process, then taste freshly brewed single-estate Ceylon tea. Arrive in Nuwara Eliya — once a British hill station at 1,868m — cooler, green and charming. Visit Gregory Lake and Victoria Park in the afternoon.
