Nuwara Eliya

Sri Lanka's tea capital at 1,868m — a cool British hill station surrounded by emerald tea estates, colonial hotels, mountain lakes and morning mist.

Not to miss in this tour

  • Kandy — Temple of the Tooth Relic and lakeside evening walk
  • Tea factory tour in Nuwara Eliya — see how Ceylon tea is made from leaf to cup
  • Horton Plains sunrise hike to World's End — 880m cliff with coastal views

Things you will do

  • Drive from Colombo or airport to Kandy through the central hills (approx. 3 hours). Arrive for afternoon sightseeing: Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the ancient Royal Palace complex, and a stroll around the beautiful Kandy Lake. Evening: attend the Kandyan cultural dance show — fire walking, acrobatics and traditional drumming.
  • Scenic mountain drive south through the Hantana and Ramboda passes — every turn reveals another layer of tea-covered hills. Stop at Ramboda Falls (109m, one of Sri Lanka's tallest), visit a working tea factory to witness the full production process, and taste several estate teas. Arrive Nuwara Eliya at 1,868m — cooler, misty and charming with its colonial racecourse and English-style park.
  • Early morning drive to Horton Plains (6:00 AM recommended to beat the mist). A 9km circular trail through cloud forest and open patana grassland leads to World's End — a breathtaking escarpment dropping 880m to the southern plains. On clear mornings you can see the south coast. Also visit Baker's Falls, a beautiful two-tiered waterfall. Return to Nuwara Eliya for afternoon tea at a colonial hill hotel.
  • The highlight of many Sri Lanka trips — board at Nanu Oya station for the Ella-bound train (train departs approx. 8:45 AM). The 3-hour journey winds through some of the world's most extraordinary tea-country scenery: curved viaducts, tunnels, waterfall glimpses and Tamil tea pluckers working the hillsides. Arrive Ella — a small, breezy mountain town surrounded by jungle ridges and valley mist.
  • Full day at Ella's own pace. Morning: hike Little Adam's Peak (45 minutes up, moderate effort) for sweeping views of the Ella Gap and the plains below. Midday: walk to Nine Arch Bridge — time your visit for the 10:40 AM or 6:45 PM train crossing for the iconic photograph. Afternoon: Ravana Falls — wide and dramatic — and optional tea plantation walk with estate workers.
