Nuwara Eliya

Central Highlands

Called 'Little England' by the British who established it as a highland retreat in the 19th century, Nuwara Eliya sits at 1,868m in the heart of Sri Lanka's tea country. The air is genuinely cool — sometimes cold at night — and the scenery is extraordinary: rolling green hills covered in manicured tea bushes, waterfalls tumbling through forest, and the dramatic escarpment of Horton Plains behind the town. The town itself retains colonial charm — a racecourse, a red post box, Tudor-style bungalows and well-kept English gardens. This is where Ceylon tea was born and where it is still grown at its finest.
