From ancient kingdoms to tea trains and southern beaches — a flexible 14-day route that captures the very best of the island without rushing.
Two weeks is the sweet spot for a first visit to Sri Lanka. It is enough time to experience the country's astonishing variety — heritage, hills, wildlife, and coast — without spending every day on the road.
Here is a route we love to build for travelers, designed to flow logically and minimise backtracking.
Days 1-4: The Cultural Triangle
Begin in the ancient heart of the island. Climb Sigiriya at dawn, explore the cave temples of Dambulla, and cycle through the medieval ruins of Polonnaruwa. Add an afternoon safari in Minneriya for elephants.
Days 5-7: Kandy and the tea hills
Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, then take the famously scenic train up to Ella, winding past waterfalls and endless tea plantations. Walk to Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge.
Days 8-10: Wildlife and transition south
Drop down to Yala or Udawalawe for leopards and elephants, then make your way to the south coast for a change of pace.
Days 11-14: The southern coast
Slow down in Mirissa, Tangalle, or the historic fort city of Galle. Swim, surf, watch for whales in season, and enjoy fresh seafood before flying home relaxed.
