Yala has one of the highest leopard densities on earth. Here is how to maximise your chances of a sighting while travelling responsibly.
Yala National Park, on the southeastern edge of the island, is famous for its leopards — and with good reason. The park's Block 1 has one of the densest concentrations of these elusive cats anywhere in the world.
Go early, go patient
The first hours after the park opens at dawn are your best bet, when animals are most active and the light is beautiful. A good tracker and a little patience matter far more than luck.
Travel responsibly
Choose a guide who keeps a respectful distance and never crowds an animal. The best sightings happen when the wildlife is calm and undisturbed — and that is better for the leopards too.
