Sri Lanka has two monsoons and a sunny coast in every season — here is how to choose the perfect month for beaches, hill country, and wildlife.
One of the best things about Sri Lanka is that there is always a sunny coast somewhere on the island. Because two separate monsoons sweep across the country at different times of year, you can travel almost any month and still find beautiful weather — you simply choose your region accordingly.
This guide breaks the year down so you can match your travel dates to the experiences you care about most, whether that is golden southern beaches, misty tea country, or wildlife at its most active.
December to March — the classic season
This is the most popular window for the south and west coasts and the Cultural Triangle. Expect dry, sunny days in Galle, Mirissa, Bentota, and Tangalle, and excellent conditions for Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Kandy.
It is also peak whale-watching season off Mirissa, when blue whales pass close to shore.
May to September — the east coast shines
While the southwest sees its monsoon, the east coast around Trincomalee, Nilaveli, and Arugam Bay enjoys its best weather. This is prime time for surfers and anyone wanting quieter beaches.
It is also the season of The Gathering at Minneriya, when hundreds of elephants congregate around the receding reservoir — one of Asia's greatest wildlife spectacles.
Hill country, all year round
The central highlands around Ella, Nuwara Eliya, and Haputale are cool and green throughout the year. Pack a light layer for the evenings, and expect occasional afternoon mist that only adds to the atmosphere of the tea estates.
